Motivation

In business, the industrialized domain encourages coherence, coordination, efficiency, and stability. Yet, the discovery of new capabilities in the uncharted domain requires experimentation. Any structure, a company, or a team, needs to manage both of these polar opposites. Components are also evolving between these extremes. These transitional components have a different set of characteristics. They need a third mechanism of management.

Detailed description

As a component approaches industralized volume operations, it becomes more widespread and defined. Focus switches to mass production of good enough which means reducing deviation. At this point, Six Sigma along with formalized frameworks such as ITIL start to rule.

In the below example we would outsource Power. On a different map, if we were the Power provider, we would consider using Six Sigma to reduce deviation.
